Player and Coaches Devotion For The Week:

ONE KEY VERSE THIS WEEK!

A very special verse. A critical verse.

A timely verse for this time in your life.

The verse is from the book of Proverbs. A book that shares much wisdom with us.

Here is that verse:

Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.
Proverbs 13:20 NIV

That is the verse this week and extremely valuable. I have personally lived the consequences of not understanding this valuable Truth. I have seen many of the athletes I have coached over the years be directly impacted by this Truth. Both for the good and for the bad. People just like you.

Read the verse once again.

Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.
Proverbs 13:20 NIV

Clear and simple.

However, to ensure we fully grasp this verse, we must know how God defines wisdom and defines fools. The passage below provides us with that definition. This passage is also from the book of Proverbs.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 1:9 NIV

The term fear in this context can mean respect. Meaning respect for the Lord. Respect for God. Respect for Jesus.

Now read our verse once again, while understanding the above definition of who is wise:

Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.
Proverbs 13:20 NIV

Essentially this teaches us to walk with those who fear the Lord. This teaches us to walk with those who respect and love God.

An important choice for you. Now to make this a reality for you, take a few minutes to complete the below steps:

1) Pray for God to guide you through the following steps.

2) Reflect on the friends you spend the most time with. Which ones do you consider wise by the above definition? Which ones do you not consider to be wise?

3) Reflect on other wise people that you could become friends with. People you could spend more time with.

4) Reflect on the changes you must make to surround yourself with wise people. To "walk" with wise people.

5) Reflect on the changes you must make to not walk with those who are unwise. You can teach them, you can love them, you can be an example to them, but do not "walk" with them. Do not "walk" in their steps.

6) Pray to God to give you the strength and perseverance to make those changes.

That is it. One verse. One key life lesson. All from God.

Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.
Proverbs 13:20 NIV

Overtime:

You are who you spend time with! Spend more time with Jesus!
