Newtown High School's softball team, the No. 3 team in the Class LL State Tournament, defeated No. 14 Enfield 4-0 at home in the second round on May 31. With the win, the Nighthawks advance to the quarterfinals and will host No. 6 Cheshire Friday, June 2, at 4:15 pm.

Down to their final couple of outs, Newtown High School’s baseball team came through in the clutch with a run to tie the game and force extra innings. Then came a two-out rally; single, walk, pinch-hit single. Ballgame.

One-Run Wonders: Nighthawk Sluggers Battle In 11 Nail-Biters During Regular Slate (By Andy Hutchison of The Newtown Bee)

If you were looking for a little suspense this spring the Newtown High School baseball diamond, or whatever field the Nighthawk sluggers were visiting, was the place to be. Among 20 regular-season games were 11 decided by a single run — including the Nighthawks’ last three, and four of their final five matchups heading into the postseason. Newtown went 6-5 in those nail-biters and posted a 13-7 overall mark and earned the No. 4 seed and a conference tournament quarterfinal-round home game.

Pitching Continues To Shine For Nighthawk Baseball Team (The Newtown Bee)

Make it ten games in which Newtown High School’s baseball team has surrendered two or less runs. The Nighthawks followed up a 5-1 win over Brookfield on May 1 by duplicating the outcome in a 5-1 win at Stratford two days later. After a 3-2 loss at Maloney on April 4, the Nighthawks shut out visiting Notre Dame Fairfield, at Fairfield Hills, 9-0 on May 8. The Nighthawks improved to 10-7 overall heading into their final three regular-season matchups.
