New Milford Beats Stratford 2-1 in Extras

Stratford traveled up to New Milford on Monday to face the Green Wave in Stratford’s second SWC league game. After fighting off 4 early walks with 3 coming in the first, Stratford starter Senior Dylan McCain carried the team on his back throwing 7 shutout innings, only yielding 6 hits, & going head-to-head with New Milford’s starter Muller in quite a pitcher’s duel. Stratford had difficulties getting anything going on offense, but fortunes turned when Junior Zach Rider led off the top of the 8th with a deep shot to LF for a home run. Senior Ben Petrie relieved Dylan McCain in the bottom of the 8th, threw admirably, but a couple of throwing errors led New Milford to eventually walk off with a 2-1 win. Stratford’s record now stands at 3-5, 0-2 SWC. Masuk and another SWC league game are up next up for Stratford on Wednesday at Penders at 4:15. The JVs play on Tuesday at 4:15 at Wooster Middle School vs. New Milford.

Darien Beats Stratford 11-1

Stratford loses the back end on the home & home with FCIAC foe Darien High School. Stratford won a thrilling game 3-2 over Darien last week, but Darien came ready to play this afternoon at 1:00. Winning pitcher from last week Senior Joe Booska started again versus the Blue Wave, but his luck on holding down the home team this week was not the same. Darien hit the ball hard, made things happen with the bunt on several occasions, and Stratford’s defense had some hiccups along the way. Stratford’s highlight came in the form of Senior Ben Petrie’s late inning bomb for a HR over the left-center field fence. Stratford’s record now stands at 3-4, 0-1 (SWC league play). New Milford at New Milford HS on Monday in league play is next up for Stratford.

Bethel 2, Stratford 0 (8 innings)

Stratford hosted Bethel today at Penders Field in Stratford’s first SWC league game. The game was dominated by pitching with Bethel’s starter issuing a first inning lead-off walk & then retiring the next 21 batters without giving up a hit. Stratford’s starter Senior Ben Petrie was just a superb through 7 innings, spacing out 4 hits, throwing only 83 pitches, and striking out 7. Bethel finally ended up catching up to Petrie in the top of the 8th with 3 singles in a row scoring a run & then another run on an IF error. Senior Joe Booska recorded Stratford’s lone hit in the bottom of the 8th off Bethel’s closer. Stratford’s record now is 2-3 overall, 0-1 in SWC league play. Bridgeport Central comes to town on Wednesday for a non league game starting at 3:45 at Penders Field.

East Catholic Beats Stratford 7-1

The Penders Memorial Scholarship Game turned out a great crowd and gathered many notables for a pre-game ceremony that included Mayor Laura Hoydick, the Penders Family, the Baird family, the Crudo family, a number of former Stratford High players from the Mr. Penders' era, a few former East Catholic players from Coach Jim Penders, Jr's days there, current SHS Athletic Director Tony DeAngelo, the East Catholic baseball team, the Stratford High baseball team, and family and friends and several of Coach Buck's teammates from the 1980's. The pre-game ceremony honored the memory and legacy of James W. 'Jim' Penders, the long-time Stratford High baseball coach, the winner of four (4) CIAC State championships, and the namesake of the high school's field in Longbrook Park. The ceremony also recognized and remembered for Stratford High Athletic Director Bob Baird and Stratford High Coach Joe Crudo, two men who gave so much sporting service to not only Stratford High but also to the Stratford community as well. Both Bob Baird and Joe Crudo passed away in recent week due to illnesses. The game started at 11:00, the sunny was brightly shining over Penders Field as only Mr. Penders and the Baird/Crudo combo would want it, and there was an early spring chill in the air only enhanced by a steady breeze. 'Home' team East Catholic ended up scoring 1 in the 2nd and 5 in the 3rd off Stratford starter Senior Dylan McCain. They added 1 more in the 5th off reliever Sophomore Jake Lubas who relieved McCain and went two full innings. Stratford's lone run came in the 3rd after Sophomore Ethan Hill bunted his way on, went to second base on a wild pitch, got over to third base on Senior Jake Kszywanos' single, and ultimately scored on Senior Conor Lesczczynski's subsequent single to LF. Stratford ended up committing 4 errors on defense, plus the pitching yielded 4 walks and 3 HBPs. Kszywanos and Lesczczynski both had 2 hits in the loss. Stratford returns to action on Monday at 4:15 at Penders hosting SWC league opponent Bethel.
