Taft fresh/soph lose their first league game.

The Fresh/Sophs started behind by just having 4 players out leaving them with only 15! Two were sick from Spring Break, one is still dealing with an injury from Basketball season so they were playing with out subs!. They played harder thien their loss a few weeks ago. Tackling was improved but just to many new players having to eat minutes. Abd having only got 5 mins or so in the first game , made the move to wing and brought the big hits. Jad also stepped in at Center and him and Jordan made a solid pairing in the middle forcing several knock-ons with their pressure. Demetri and Anthony were again the great leaders at 9 and 10. Demetri after a few high tackles at the beginning of the game really settled in and impacted the game with his hitting. Demetri had a great run off the scrum from about 25m out for Taft's only score of the first half to end the half 29-5. The second half started strong defensively. Taft repelled Neuqua well. Fadi, Baran making strong contributions in the forwards. The subs probably got to us after about 15 minutes and they were able to get a try. Taft was able to answer though with a series of pick and goes from the base of the ruck! Pagan finally put the ball over and made the conversion to raise Taft's score to 12! The boys fought hard and with our 4 missing player maybe the outcome will be different in May when we play again!

Boys second preseason game shows lots of promise for new players

The weather was better then expected but still cool and wet and it seemed to affect the boys hands. Game got off to okay start but to many errant passes kept Taft from escaping out of their own territory allowing two early scores from Marist. An early high tackle from Jeremias Cruz saw Nathan Saba sub in at scrum half. The scrums looked powerful even getting a few steals but lineouts still need some work. Some communication breakdowns let two more easy scores for Marist on long runs. Our starters showed some great growth overall from week 1 to week 2 but their is more to do. The second half we made substitutions to give all our new players some time to run and learn. Gustavo Maldonado looked pretty strong in his second game out. Making his debut and some solid tackles was Manuel Valdez. Look to see great things as they learn more about the game. In the fresh/soph game there were a lot of players seeing the field for the first time. Overall not bad against a more experience side. Will be good to see how they grow and develop this year.

Game Two: Keep Improving!

The Taft freshmen had some first game jitters last week hosting Crowne Pointe but there were some bright points that the team hopes to build on! The defense showed some good fight minus with some big tackles from DE Wesley Genao and LB Leo Worden. Matthew Slotowski just missed a pick six moment. A few dropped passes on offense stalled our drives that could have tightened up the game. Going into this week the players and coaches are big push to stop the run at the line of the scrimmage and clean up their route running/blocking schemes on offense to open up the scoring! With many players getting their first football game ever Saturday under the belt look for the "House that T Built" to be rocking Thursday night as we kick off game two!!!! Hope we see you there.

First Game Comes Amidst A Heat Wave

Taft Freshmen will have a tough game to start their season against Indiana Power House Crown Pointe. The challenge was made even tougher by being held inside Wednesday and Thursday to deal with the tremendous heat index's which reached 120 in Chicago. The boys made the best of it getting is some conditioning work, using the tackle mats bought through the rugby team's Blast fundraiser a year ago and walk throughs in the gym on offense and defense to stay sharp. The boys will get in one more practice Friday that will be longer then typical day before a game practice to make sure they are prepared for Saturday morning. Freshmen Leo Worden will be long snapping for varsity program tonight so hopefully he gets some good scouting on their offensive formations for his duties at middle line backer Saturday morning. GO EAGLES!
