Newtown High School’s girls’ soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the South-West Conference Tournament in dramatic fashion. Third-seeded Newtown edged visiting and sixth-seeded Immaculate of Danbury 1-0 in overtime on October 29.

Among the handful of teams bunched together within a point of each other and vying for one of the top spots in the South-West Conference Tournament, the Newtown and Pomperaug of Southbury high school girls’ soccer teams squared off at Blue & Gold Stadium on October 25. The host Nighthawks handed the Panthers their first loss to a conference rival, 1-0, behind Bella Gerace’s first-half put-back goal. Gerace deposited a rebound, set up by Katie Rowan, and goalkeeper Ryann Heim-Sherwood made it stand up with six saves for a Senior Night victory.

Strategy Pays Dividends For Girls’ Soccer Team In Dramatic Win (By Andy Hutchison of the Newtown Bee)

In the waning moments of the game, and only seconds after student fans started chanting, “I believe that we will win,” Newtown High School standout scorer Riley Powers made it happen. Powers took a pass from Katie Rowan, got behind the defense, and deposited a tie-breaking goal to send the girls’ soccer team to a wild 2-1 victory over visiting Bethel on October 14.
