Monroe, CT — If you were looking for a little suspense this spring the Newtown High School baseball diamond, or whatever field the Nighthawk sluggers were visiting, was the place to be. Among 20 regular-season games were 11 decided by a single run — including the Nighthawks’ last three, and four of their final five matchups heading into the postseason. Newtown went 6-5 in those nail-biters and posted a 13-7 overall mark and earned the No. 4 seed and a conference tournament quarterfinal-round home game.

Pitching Continues To Shine For Nighthawk Baseball Team (The Newtown Bee)

Sandy Hook, CT — Make it ten games in which Newtown High School’s baseball team has surrendered two or less runs. The Nighthawks followed up a 5-1 win over Brookfield on May 1 by duplicating the outcome in a 5-1 win at Stratford two days later. After a 3-2 loss at Maloney on April 4, the Nighthawks shut out visiting Notre Dame Fairfield, at Fairfield Hills, 9-0 on May 8. The Nighthawks improved to 10-7 overall heading into their final three regular-season matchups.

Sandy Hook, CT — After breaking a scoreless tie with a run in the fifth inning, only to see visiting Brookfield plate the tying run in the top of the sixth, Newtown High School’s baseball team got the bats going with a four spot in the bottom of the frame. Starting pitcher Will Burns finished off a gem and the Nighthawks posted a 5-1 win over the Bobcats on May 1.

Weston, CT — A combination of veteran and inexperienced/ new-to-varsity players were expected to contribute, and that has been true to form in the early going for Newtown High School’s baseball team. The Nighthawks, following a couple of losses to begin the season, carried a three-game winning streak into a s scheduled visit to Weston on Wednesday, April 12. Newtown has gotten tremendous pitching during this stretch, posting a shutout and allowing a combined three runs in as many games.

Bethel, CT — Call him Charlie Hustle. Newtown High School’s Charlie Curtis darted home with the South-West Conference Championship-clinching run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Newtown High School’s baseball team stole one from Masuk of Monroe, 3-2, at neutral site Bethel High on May 25.

Sandy Hook, CT — Perhaps more than in any other sport, baseball requires clutch contributions from different individuals on any given day. With a batting lineup of nine hitters and a pitching rotation of a handful of hurlers, along with a relief corps, not to mention bench players, there is no telling who will come through from one contest to the next. For Newtown High School’s baseball team, this has been all the more prevalent with some younger and bench players stepping in — and stepping up — in the absence of starters put due to injury and illness.

Stratford, CT — Newtown doubled up Bunnell of Stratford 12-6 on May 10, improving to 9-5 this spring. Goyette led the offensive charge with four hits and four RBI, and DeFelice knocked in two. Goyette and Curtis doubled, and Miller tripled.

Nighthawks Fielding Miscues Lose 4-3 (By Andy Hutchison of the Newtown Bee)

Sandy Hook, CT — The Nighthawks overcame four errors against Stratford but couldn’t shake off three fielding miscues against Weston in a 4-3 nine-inning loss on May 7. The Nighthawks made some strong plays in the field, too, with first baseman throwing home to catcher DeFelice to nab a base runner trying to score in the opening inning, DeFelice throwing to second baseman Goyette to catch a would-be base stealer, and Braun making some solid plays at third base, including a dive to snare a slightly off-line throw from the outfield to save a run. Goyette doubled and drove in a run, and Miller had an RBI.
