Gone with the wind

Game two of pool play is against Long Beach Heartwell. In a late Saturday game, wind blowing and the LM flag waving proud. This game would end up in yet another close one for the girls of La Mirada. Once again, we get to strike first being in the visitors dug out. To lead things off was Faith. Can anyone guess what happened? If you guess walk, your right. We have been accustom to a walk and two steals from Faith to lead of every game. Two batters later Andrea sets down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to score Faith and move abby to third from first after her walk. 1-0 LM

Mirada Maddness

This was the first game of our home tournament called Mirada Madness with host just over 60 teams in all divisions. The girls went up against neighboring city Fullerton Hills. Pool play rules are 1hr 15 min game drop dead. Meaning when time has expired the game stops and the score will be reverted back to the last inning. Because of that rule Coach Martin on the toss and elected to be visitors to get the first at bat and try to put pressure on Fullerton. Good call coach!

The one that got away

On a cloudy day with scattered showers in the morning La Mirada softball was eager to play some ball on the fast turf at Fullerton hills. The opponent was Diamond Bar, a team that beat the girls in a friendly scrimmage 5-2 a week prior. Im sure, Diamond Bar (Gold) walked on the field with confidence with a 1 - 0 record against La Mirada (silver). La Mirada being the visiting team was at bat first, and what an at bat it was. Diamond Bars pitcher was rattled right out the gate, allowing a walk(Faith) and a hit (Abby) to its first two batters. Up next was the big stick of Andrea, which did not disappoint. She hit the ball opposite side towards second base to record the first two scores of the day. A few more walks and a hit by Destyni Salazar put the 5 up rule into affect. In the circle for the day was new found ace Emily. She did not disappoint. Her consistency in the circle has been remarkable, holding Diamond Bar to just one run into the 4th inning. Some defensive web gems by Rylee Thurmond at shortstop helped keep Diamond bars offense in check. La Mirada was able to tack on a couple more runs one a perfectly placed bunt by Faith that lead to three bases and an RBI. The game looked to be well in hand headed to the last inning with time expiring. Three outs was all that was needed to advance to the semifinal round of bracket play as the #3 team. In a ploy to save the ace Emily for the next game a pitching change was made. The La Mirada pitcher struggled to find the strike zone which seemed inconsistent into the later part of the game. A pitching change had to be made with 1 run scored, bases loaded and no outs. The decision was made to bring Emily back into the game to close it out. The Diamond Bar batter ripped Emilys first pitch thrown. A line drive right into the glove Andrea at third base, who also tags the base for a double play to give the la mirada girls some breathing room. After some timely hits and a few missed plays, La Mirada found themselves tied after recording the third out. The game went into international tie breaker rules, which starts the inning with a runner on second and no outs. La mirada was able to Load the base, But that was as far as they can get, leaving three on base. Diamond Bar was able to scrap up the go ahead run and the big comeback victory to end La Miradas' first all star tournament. Overall the girls played well, and lessons were learn for both players and coaches. On to the next one, at home for the Mirada Madness tournament.

Don't call it a comeback

Bracket Play has officially started, lose and go home or win and stay alive! Looks like la Mirada ain't ready to go home yet. The first game of bracket play was between two number 3 seeds, Temple City and yours truly LM. Temple took a quick 3 - 0 lead in the first making good contact and putting the ball in play. Could have easily been 4 if not for the great relay play to stop a possible homer. A hard hit ball to left center field got passed Lylah, however her team mate Layla ( Part of the L and L girls ) had her back with good outfield back up coverage. The ball was successfully relayed to Rylee T. which was then tossed to Faith and almost had the out at second. The runner decided to continue to third, Faiths throw was high and bounced off Andreas glove. The runner went home. Bad Idea! Andrea with a canon arm throws it to the sure handed moose (Lauren Avila) and records the out at home. In the second inning it was our time to score. Putting up a 2 spot making it a 1 run game. Temple city struggled at the circle walking in a few runs, however, adding to their own score. It was tied up at 4 a piece with time running thin. In the forth and final inning TC went up 1 and was looking to add some insurance runs with bases loaded and only 1 out. TC was not afraid to swing the bat and they did just that, hitting a fly ball to first base. Abby, who is known for making big outs in big moments caught the ball for the second out of the inning, noticing that the runner had left third base and tossed the ball home. Evie, playing her first inning at catcher this summer caught the ball and tagged out the runner at the plate completing the double play and getting LM out of trouble. Chasing 1, the home team La Mirada was down to their last at bat of the night. Our girls were ball magnets tonight, Emily taking two, Destyni got hit in the dome (head), but no bigger HBP was Lylah taking one off the shoulder. As she teared up, coach told her " your ok, rub it off, your the most important person on the field right now, you represent the tying run!". The tears instantly stoped and the fire in her eyes was a sight to see. The next few batters had great plate presence, taking walks and eventually scoring Lylah. TC felt the pressure, changing pitchers with the winning run (Layla) on third. They brought in a hard throwing giant to try and save the game. little did they know, LM was at the top of the line up and the teams best eye was at the plate. Eagle eye Faith worked the hard trowing hurler to full count! Fouling of a couple steamers to stay alive, Faith eventually took her 8th walk of the tournament and recorded the game winning RBI with Layla jumping on home plate with two feet to finish the comeback victory, leaving Temple City on the field and on to a long ride home. Great first win for the La Mirada girls!
