Senior Day Finale'
San Juan Capistrano, CA — JSerra celebrated with 3 seniors starting today, Michael Woodward, Nick Dubrow, and Esteban Johnson. The competition was just a little too strong for us as we couldn't repeat our 'upset' of them [as we did in the previous natch.] Coach called it an upset even though we ended up ahead of them in the league standings. Brady and Gary continued with their undefeated streak, winning 3 sets and solidifying the #1 seed in the doubles champions ships Wednesday at SMArgarita.

Doesn't get much Closer; 9- 9 70-71 loss to OLu
Anaheim, CA — This one hurt, alot...it will keep us from making CIF this year. Somewhere, we need to find a solution to closing out matches earlier...Losing 9 - 9 then 70 - 71 in the game count is something KOach will never get used to.

Improvement
San Juan Capistrano, CA — We lost to this team 3 to 15 a couple of weeks ago...KOach gave his ALAMO speech today and drew the line in the sand and the whole team bought in. Just as the real battle in San Antonio, we were severely overmatched in the singles area and gave up 8 of 9 sets, BUT, this was an improvement over last time. The lone set was an solid 6-1 victory from Zach Champine vs Servite line 3. Our doubles stuck to KOach's game plan and took 6 of the 9 sets, barely missing out on the last match of the day, where the Lions were tripped up in a tiebreaker.

Day 2 Sage Hill Invite
San Juan Capistrano, CA — DAy 2 was much cooler than the past 2 days! Our boys competed very well today, most of the sets we came up short on were 6-8 or 7-8 tiebreaker losses. 2 or 3 'heart'breakers. Again, this compass style tournament keeps all players in; even if you lose, youjust move to another section of the draw, NE, NW, SE, SW [thus, the compass].

Newport Beach, CA — Our boys played in an individual "compass" format today; in which, they are placed into a draw and will play 4 matches in 2 days. If you win, you go to the right and west, should you lose. Every round will give you points to add to whole school's tally. JSerra lost 6 sets today vs 4 wins. Brady and Gary made it to the semis of doubles while Zach took 2 easy sets to advance to the singles semis. Tomorrow gets tougher.

Never-the-less, it is one of the top must win, last match battle Koach has ever seen on boys or girls team. KOach kept subbing singles in trying to find someone who could stop the bleeding... not only did Luke Krowlikowski do that, he inflicted some damage!

Huntington Beach, CA — JSerra's toughest match was their 1st one... early morning did not serve us well; the Lions managed a 3-3 tie, but, unfortunately fell short in the total game tally, 33-36. This was a good lesson for future tight league and CIF matches, showing how every single game counts... These 3 little games kept us out of the championship final today. Aiden German at #2 singles, MArco Belacio w/ Mikey Junge and Charlie Vogel w/ Luke Krowlikowski in the #2 and #3 doubles spots picked up the 3 set victories.

San Juan Capistrano, CA — The Braves were just that today...bringing some young new players to the JSerra Tennis Complex. Although outmanned, Bosco played well, fought hard and well-mannered foes. Their line 2 doubles literally had never picked up a racket until February! The Lions were very hospitable in every aspect except set count and game tally; specifically, Zach Champine going triple bagel right through the Braves lineup!

Tough Loss in Laguna Today
Laguna Beach, CA — These beach schools are not friendly to us! At least this time we rode the wave right up to the end and were "Hangin' Ten', smiling big, before crashing into the surf. Brady Schaefgen upset Laguna's #1 player, then disposed of their #2 player in another close set, but had a tough loss at line#3. Zach Champine defeated their 2 and 3 lines , but fell to line #1, 4-6 in round 3. Gary Davidson, with Joe Bond, at #1 dubs also disposed of the Waves 1 and 2 teams, but, lost a close round 3 to the #3 team. Aiden German and Hudson Aase took care of their line 2 and 3 duo opponents , but came up short vs. Beach's top team.

Foothill took care of business today!
San Juan Capistrano, CA — Foothill brought their A-Game today to JSerra and opened up a can of whoop whatever. The Lions were missing players on varsity and JV today, which doesn't bode well in the final count. Singles players picked up 2 sets and a lone doubles point. Brady and Zach both picked up points at line #2 singles in hard-fought matches. Zach narrowly lost to the Knights #3 singles, a lefty freshman; but, had a late come from behind in his line 2 victory. Their #1 player was untouchable. The only doubles team we could come close to was their line 3 team, who Aiden and Joe handled by playing solid, smart, patient tennis. Esteban and Hudson played this team tough as well, but a late service break hurt us. We have 4 practice days to get ready for our league opener vs SM and will need to shore up our doubles play before then.

Good team effort today !
San Juan Capistrano, CA — The Lions were almost at full strength today for the first time this season, just in time. Crean Lutheran is a very solid team, a qtr finalist in CIF last year. Singles players Brady and Zach ran in to an 11+ UTR player, headed for WestPoint which kept them from sweeping 3. This is a great example of how we don't ever really have to beat the other teams #1 player to win a match. Zach was down vs their #2 player 2-5 and stormed back to take a tiebreaker 7-6 [7-5]. This win broke their back. Score was 3-3 after round 1, and the Lions took round 2, 4 -2 for a 7-5 lead going into round 3. Michael Woodward and Kenney Perez added 5 games to the count in case we ended up in a 9-9 tie. While Gary Davidson and Nick Dubrow narrowly missed a sweep, dropping a round 3 tiebreaker. Esteban Johnson w/ Hudson Aase added a doubles set to the tally. Luke Krolikowski and Charlie Vogel rotated in for a hard-fought last round doubles set.

Great win today... Lions over Friars!
San Juan Capistrano, CA — Coaches had to both run out for bottles of "Grecian Formula" after today. Both Varsity and JV won 9 - 9 on total game count... Once again proving that it really is a total team sport! Brocks bagel[s] (long story); got "captained" on set point in round 1, coupled with Danny's bagels and then Brock and Zach's great efforts in [especially] their last sets avoiding any chance for the Friars to catch us in the game count. "But wait!, there's more!" In round 3, my 1 and 2 doubles teams, Gary Davidson with Aiden German and Nick Dubrow, respectively, were both down, late... Gary and Sean fought off a no ad point on a long rally at 5 - 5 on a fantastic long rally, where Friar Tuck had a point blank shot at Sean, trying to turn him in to Ichabod Crane, but, the fence got in the way! If it was a letter, it would've been charged double for airmail!. Aiden and Nick were in a similar predicament, got the break and PROMPTLY held serve to close out the win! Had these 2 teams not rallyed, game count wouldn't mean a thing. Yes, we were that close to a 11 - 7 loss...

Lions regroup for 2nd Trinity League victory
Lakewood, CA — Missing 5 bona fide starters, JSerra sheepishly crept into Lakewood CC this afternoon, shuffling lineup suggestions amongst each other. KOach finally settled on what he thought would be best producing in respect to total games [should the sets be tied 9-9] Koach Kirk's record vs Bosco is 24 - 2 over the years, losing twice to the Josh Rosen [yes, THAT Josh Rosen] squad. BIG producers today were our subs, who basically won the match...Michael Woodward with Rodney Culwell won 2 sets in doubles before succumbing to the Braves line #1 team. Brian Chi partnered with Jack Thompson to defeat Bosco's line 3 team easily. Two of these sets were won in round 1, which coupled with Brock's round 1 come from behind, and Zach and Anthony's singles wins, gave the Lions a 6- 0 lead. The quivers were empty at that point and the Lions never looked back. Freshman, Anthony Ashworth got his first ever Trinity League singles win, and elusive prize for young players in this league.

Aliso Viejo, CA — Brock Bowman swept all 3 singles matches as did [other MVP's] Sean Delaney with Gary Davidson, appearing to set up a squeaky win... but, the tough Wolverines gritted their teeth and only allowed us 1 additional set in singles [Zach Champine] and another doubles set from Nick Dubrow with Aiden German. Last year, this was a nail-biter as well, with a 9-9 game count win to the Lions. This is becoming one of our non league 'friendlies' and we are glad to continue this contest yearly, girls and boys. Esteban Johnson joined the team and will be a helpful addition in the doubles lineup as we get ready for Mater Dei on Friday.
